Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is Isotretinoin (Roaccutane) / How does it work?
Isotretinoin, commonly known by its brand name Roaccutane, is an oral retinoid medication used to treat severe acne. It works by dramatically reducing the amount of oil produced by the skin, helping to prevent clogged pores. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that help heal existing acne. Treatment usually lasts 5 to 9 months but in some case can take longer to reach clearance.
2. Who is a typical candidate for Isotretinoin treatment?
Isotretinoin is typically recommended for individuals with severe or cystic acne who haven’t responded to other treatments. Before starting Isotretinoin, a thorough consultation is conducted to determine if it is the right option for you. Women of childbearing age must follow a strict contraceptive regimen due to the risk of birth defects.
3. What are the possible side effects of Isotretinoin?
Side effects can include dry skin, lips, and eyes, along with increased sensitivity to the sun. We take all potential risks seriously, will ensure that you’re well informed throughout the treatment process, and will monitor you closely to identify any side effects and manage them effectively. Please see links below for detailed possible side effects.
4. How long will it take to see results?
Results can vary, but most patients notice a significant improvement within the first two months of treatment. Full results are typically seen after completing a 4 to 6 month course. Many patients experience long-term remission from acne following their treatment.
5. Will my acne return after treatment?
In many cases, Isotretinoin provides long-lasting results, with the majority of patients experiencing permanent acne reduction. However, in some cases, a follow-up course or maintenance treatment may be required.
6. How are visits scheduled during treatment ?
A comprehensive initial visit (30 mins) is required, and pre treatment blood tests. Thereafter monthly visits are needed. Prsescrptions cannot be issued without an in person review. This may be relevant if you are travelling overseas for longer than a few weeks, as may be common with third level students. In this circumstance a treatment break may be taken, and treatment resumed on return. This approach is safe and effective.
