Understanding Acne
Acne is a common skin condition that affects most people at some point in their lives. It occurs when hair follicles become blocked with oil and dead skin cells, leading to spots, pimples, and sometimes deeper cysts or nodules.
While acne is most common in teenagers due to hormonal changes during puberty, it can affect people of all ages. Adult acne is increasingly recognised, particularly in women.

Treatment options include topical prescription therapies, oral antibiotics, hormonal treatments and isotretinoin (roaccutane) for treatment resistant or severe acne.
Isotretinoin/ Roaccutane
Isotretinoin is a powerful medication that can be prescribed by experienced doctors after a thorough assessment. This includes reviewing your treatment history, discussing potential side effects, psychological evaluation, pregnancy risks, and blood testing. Most treatment durations are 5-9 months, and require monthly visits and regular blood tests. We are pleased that Dr. Hickey and Dr. Finucane are now offering this service in the practice.
